A promise

I used to be able to draw. In 2005 I went to art school and learnt, doing 9 hours of drawing a week, along with photography, painting, printmaking, sculpture and theory classes. I loved the meditativeness of completely losing myself in an image, looking up and it being an hour later than when I started!

But it stopped. And without practice, the ability to draw becomes much harder. And if drawings don't come out the way you wanted them to, the motivation goes.

However, recently I have been feeling the desire to start drawing again, and the desire has been aided by the creative people around me. My brother draws, frequently. My mum has started teaching herself to paint watercolours. And my boyfriend has just enrolled in a drawing class. Surrounded by all of these amazing people, and no creative output of my own!

So I guess this blog is to be a little promise to myself, that every week I will find the time to draw, and then post it here. So that I can see some sort of progress over time, I hope.

To start here are a couple of drawings I did in 2005.

  1. Emily,
You are blessed to be around so many creative people on a daily basis:). They will support you along your creative journey. Art is an amazing thing to share with your loved ones.
Your drawings from o4 are lovely. Drawing is just like riding a bike...you have to work at it and reawaken those drawing muscles. Once you do that I'm sure that with a little practice and patience you'll be right back up on that bike again. I started drawing again 6 years ago after not drawing for 20 years...it was alot of hard work, but when I go they'll have to pry the pencil from my cold dead hand...hehehehe Welcome back to the road of cretivity!

  2. Welcome to EDM and thanks for sharing some of your drawings. The very best advice I received when I joined EDM was to draw something, anything, every day - even if it only takes 5 minutes. Your drawings are lovely - should be easy for you to get going again with all of the inspiration around you.

  5. Welcome to EDM Emily! The important thing now is that you pick up your drawing tool and just draw! I too have many periods in my life when I did not draw for long stretches at a time ~ the hardest part is getting started again. So, just start making marks and play! Because, if it's not fun, what's the point? I'm looking forward to seeing your drawings!

  6. You still CAN draw. If you feel rusty, you will lose that feeling with practice. Welcome to the group and I look forward to seeing more drawings. These three you posted are wonderful!

  9. you can do it! EDM is a great motivator to keep at it! Daily drawing is an exercise to keep your drawing muscles in shape! I'm a bit out of shape, myself, but I'm trying to start up my daily practice too!
